WASHINGTON, July 18: The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) on Friday dismissed as false an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claim that two oil tankers exploded after striking naval mines in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

In a post on X, CENTCOM categorically denied the IRGC-circulated report, stating that no such incident had occurred and describing the Iranian claim as misinformation.

The denial comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran following days of intensified military operations and exchanges between the two sides. The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, carries nearly a fifth of global oil supplies, making any reports of disruptions closely watched by international markets and regional governments.

The IRGC had claimed that two oil tankers were damaged after hitting mines in the narrow waterway linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, raising concerns over the security of commercial shipping in the region.

CENTCOM, however, rejected the allegation outright, offering no indication that any commercial vessels had been involved in such an incident.

The conflicting statements underscore the ongoing information war accompanying the military confrontation between Washington and Tehran, with both sides issuing competing narratives as tensions continue to escalate across the Gulf region.
