ADEN, Aug 8: Yemen’s armed forces announced Saturday that they had launched a military operation targeting Houthi positions and military equipment in response to recent attacks on government forces.

Army spokesman Col. Majid al-Nuzaili said the operation targeted Houthi fighters and military equipment along several front lines and axes, following attacks on military camps in the provinces of Marib and Hadhramaut.

Nuzaili accused the Houthis of pushing Yemen deeper into regional conflicts while serving foreign agendas, and blamed the group for worsening the country’s economic crisis and fueling sectarian tensions.

He held the Houthis and those supporting them responsible for any further escalation, warning that the Yemeni army would respond “without hesitation” if attacks continued.

The Houthis have not issued an immediate statement on the reported military operation.

Yemen’s Defense Ministry said Thursday that 17 soldiers and officers were killed and many others wounded in a ballistic missile and drone attack by the Iran-aligned Houthis on army units in Marib and Hadhramaut.

Fighting between Yemen’s government forces and the Houthis has intensified across several fronts since early July.
