Years of Waiting Ends? UK Moves to Fast-Track Rape Cases With Specialist Courts

LONDON, Sept 21:  The UK government will introduce specialist courtrooms for rape and serious sexual offences across England and Wales in a move aimed at putting victims at the center of the criminal justice system, Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced Monday.

Under the plan, every Crown Court in England and Wales will have at least one courtroom specifically equipped to hear rape and serious sexual offence cases within the next two years, the government said.

Rape cases will be prioritized to reduce uncertainty and delays for survivors, while courts will receive specialist upgrades, including private waiting rooms and separate entrances for victims.

The government said the new approach would put victims “front and centre of the criminal justice system” and help hold more perpetrators accountable.

Burnham said victims of rape and serious sexual offences had for too long felt “let down by our justice system,” noting that prosecution rates for rape remained low and many victims waited years for justice.

He said the specialist courtrooms would form part of “major changes” intended to “rebalance” the justice system and put victims first.

“These changes are long overdue and will make a significant difference, but focusing on prosecution alone will not be enough,” Burnham said.

He added that the government would also step up efforts to prevent rape and other serious sexual offences from occurring in the first place.
