LOS ANGELES, Dec 9: A woman who claims to have been sexually assaulted by Sean "Diddy" Combs has updated her lawsuit to include allegations of assault by Jay-Z, accusing the rapper and businessman of also assaulting her at the same party.
The original lawsuit, filed in October against Combs, now also includes Shawn Carter (Jay-Z) as a defendant. This marks the first time a celebrity, other than Combs, has been implicated in this case.
In response to the allegations, Jay-Z issued a statement to CNN calling the claims “heinous” and urging the woman to file a criminal complaint, rather than a civil one, emphasizing that anyone who would commit such a crime against a minor should be “locked away.”
Combs was indicted on charges of sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and prostitution-related offenses. He has pleaded not guilty and denied all wrongdoing in connection with nearly 30 civil lawsuits filed against him.
The woman, identified as Jane Doe, claims she was 13 years old when the alleged assaults occurred at an after-party following the 2000 Video Music Awards. According to the lawsuit, after feeling faint from a drink she consumed at the party, she wandered into a nearby bedroom, where she alleges Carter raped her first, followed by Combs. The woman says she managed to escape by striking Combs and fleeing the party.
Carter was initially identified in the lawsuit as "Celebrity A."
The complaint also reveals that the woman’s attorneys reached out to Carter for mediation, hoping to resolve the matter. However, Carter responded by filing a counter-lawsuit and allegedly orchestrating a campaign of harassment, intimidation, and bullying aimed at the plaintiff’s legal team. The lawsuit claims these efforts were meant to silence the woman and discredit her attorneys, but ultimately failed. The woman decided to amend the lawsuit after what was described as "egregious conduct" by Carter.
In his statement, Carter dismissed the mediation request as a "blackmail attempt" and criticized the lawyer representing the plaintiff, suggesting that he had a history of similar tactics.
Tony Buzbee, the Houston-based attorney representing the woman, responded on Saturday, stating that the seriousness of the matter would be addressed in court. He reiterated his confidence in the case, noting that the allegations would be litigated properly.
CNN also reached out to Jay-Z's wife, Beyoncé Knowles, for comment.
In his statement, Carter expressed his personal distress over the situation, particularly the impact it may have on his family. He stated that he and his wife would have to explain the media coverage to their children, lamenting the loss of innocence for everyone involved.
In November, CNN reported that an anonymous male celebrity had filed a lawsuit against Buzbee, claiming that he was the victim of an extortion attempt. The celebrity accused Buzbee and his firm of demanding large sums of money or else publicly accusing him of false allegations of sexual assault involving minors. Buzbee denied these extortion claims and stated that his firm would continue to fight for sexual assault survivors, refusing to let powerful individuals intimidate or silence them.
On Sunday, Buzbee took to social media in response to Carter’s statement, asserting that the alleged victim never demanded money from him but sought only confidential mediation. Buzbee expressed pride in the woman’s resolve, emphasizing her bravery in moving forward with the case.
