Where Did the Money Go? Iranians Report Funds Disappearing From Bank Accounts

TEHRAN, Jun 6: Growing numbers of Iranian citizens are reporting unexplained losses from their bank accounts, raising concerns about the security of the country's financial system and deepening public distrust of banking institutions.

According to a report by Alhurra, customers of major banks, including Bank Melli and Bank Sepah, have complained that funds disappeared from their accounts without warning. Some account holders said bank officials attributed the losses to hacking incidents or cyberattacks allegedly carried out by hostile actors, while others said they received little or no explanation.

The reports come amid heightened concerns over cybersecurity and financial stability in Iran. Iranian authorities have previously acknowledged that certain banking institutions were targeted in cyber and physical attacks. However, officials have not confirmed any widespread theft of deposits or systemic losses affecting account holders.

The Alhurra investigation also cited activists and opposition figures who claim authorities have increasingly used legal and security measures to freeze or seize assets belonging to individuals accused of cooperating with foreign adversaries. Those allegations have not been independently verified.
