NEW YORK, Oct 18: WhatsApp is set to trial a new feature that limits the number of messages users can send without receiving a reply, in a move aimed at tackling spam on the platform, the company confirmed Friday.
The Meta-owned messaging service is experimenting with different monthly caps designed to target high-volume senders, particularly businesses and spammers, while allowing typical users to continue messaging without restrictions.
All messages sent by individuals and businesses count toward the cap, including multiple unread messages to the same recipient. However, once the recipient replies, those messages are removed from the tally. Users nearing the limit will receive a warning notification within the app.
WhatsApp said that average users are unlikely to hit the cap, noting that it is generally uncommon for people to keep messaging those who do not respond.
The test will launch in multiple countries over the coming weeks as part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to reduce spam and scams on its platform.
In 2024, WhatsApp introduced the ability to unsubscribe from business marketing messages. More recently, in August 2025, it began notifying users when unknown contacts add them to groups. The company also reported banning more than 6.8 million accounts linked to scam operations in the first half of 2025.
This new messaging cap is the latest step in WhatsApp’s broader campaign to improve user safety and reduce unwanted communications.
