WhatsApp is reportedly in the process of developing a new feature that will enable users to share video and music audio during calls on the messaging platform. Initially identified by a feature tracker on iOS, the company is now extending the same functionality to its Android app. According to information provided by WABetaInfo, a feature tracker, this joint video and music audio listening experience will be available only when screen sharing is active during a video call and is not supported in audio-only calls.

Meta-owned WhatsApp is actively working on implementing the video and music audio sharing feature on both Android and iOS platforms. Earlier, it was observed that WhatsApp was incorporating support for this feature on iOS, and the ongoing development for Android suggests that users will eventually be able to use this feature seamlessly across platforms.

In the most recent WhatsApp beta for Android (version 2.23.26.18), WABetaInfo noted that WhatsApp is in the process of allowing all participants in a video call to listen to music being played on a single device. However, it’s important to mention that the feature is still under development, and even users enrolled in beta updates won’t be able to test it in the current version.

Similar to the iOS implementation, the ability to share video and music audio on WhatsApp will not function in audio-only calls, as highlighted by WABetaInfo. Additionally, even in video calls where the video is disabled, this feature will not be supported, according to information shared by the feature tracker.

This new feature draws parallels with Apple’s SharePlay, introduced in 2021, allowing users to collectively watch videos and listen to music from select apps and play games during a FaceTime call. Whether WhatsApp’s video and music audio sharing feature will integrate seamlessly with various music and video apps remains to be seen when it is eventually rolled out to users in the future.
