MUMBAI, May 2: The deaths of a family of four in Mumbai, initially blamed on contaminated watermelon, have taken a troubling turn, with early forensic findings suggesting possible poisoning rather than routine food contamination.

The victims, identified as Abdullah Dokadia (45), his wife Nasreen (35), and their daughters Zainab (13) and Ayesha (16), reportedly fell ill in the early hours after hosting a dinner for relatives last Saturday. The family served mutton pulao to guests, who left without any symptoms. Later, at around 1 a.m., the family consumed watermelon, and by 5 a.m., all four developed severe vomiting and diarrhoea, consistent with suspected food poisoning. They died within hours.

However, initial forensic examinations have raised serious concerns. Sources indicated that several internal organs—including the brain, heart and intestines—showed a greenish discoloration, a finding that doctors say does not align with typical food poisoning cases.

Adding to the mystery, traces of morphine—a powerful painkiller usually administered under strict medical supervision—were reportedly detected in Abdullah Dokadia’s body. Investigators are now examining whether these points point to prior medical use, accidental exposure, or a more sinister cause.

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has clarified that no direct link between the deaths and the watermelon has been established so far, urging caution against speculation. Officials said conclusions will only be drawn after detailed scientific analysis.

Police have registered a case of accidental death and recorded statements from the relatives who attended the dinner and consumed the same meal without falling ill. Authorities are also exploring other angles, including whether the family was under any form of stress.

Meanwhile, viscera samples from the victims have been sent for chemical analysis, and doctors who conducted the autopsies have withheld final opinions pending laboratory results. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the exact cause behind the sudden and tragic deaths.
