Visa Extensions and Fine Waivers in the Gulf Bring Relief to Stranded Travellers

KUWAIT CITY, Mar 6: Several Gulf countries have introduced temporary measures to support residents and visitors stranded by widespread flight disruptions following the closure of airspace across parts of the Middle East.

Authorities in Kuwait, the UAE and Qatar announced visa extensions and the suspension of overstay penalties after flight cancellations and delays left many travellers unable to depart the region. Officials said the measures aim to ensure individuals remain legally protected during the ongoing travel disruption.

Kuwait Announces Automatic Visa Extension

The Kuwaiti government said all visit visas will be automatically extended for one month starting Feb. 28, 2026.

Expats currently outside the country who have exceeded the permitted absence period will also receive an automatic three-month absence permit. Authorities said the process will be carried out electronically, eliminating the need to visit government offices.

All related fines and fees have been waived, while officials noted that further extensions could be introduced if the situation persists. Expats were advised to follow official updates through government platforms, including the Sahel App, and through Residency Affairs departments.

UAE Suspends Overstay Fines

In the UAE, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security announced that visitors and certain residents will not face overstay fines if they remain in the country beyond their visa validity due to flight disruptions.

The measure, effective Feb. 28, applies to tourists on visit or tourist visas, individuals holding exit permits and residents who had cancelled their residency visas while preparing to leave the country.

Officials said the decision was taken after many travellers were unable to depart following the closure of regional airspace.

Qatar Grants One-Month Visa Extension

Authorities in Qatar also announced a one-month extension for all visas beginning Feb. 28.

The extension applies to all visa categories, including those that have already expired or are nearing expiry. Officials said the process will be completed automatically online and that visa extension fees will be waived.

However, individuals with existing visa violations must settle outstanding fines before benefiting from the extension.

Authorities also urged residents and visitors to follow official safety guidance amid rising regional tensions.

By extending visas and suspending penalties, governments aim to prevent stranded passengers from facing legal complications until flight operations return to normal.
