BELFAST, Jun 10: Violent protests broke out in Belfast on Tuesday night as hundreds of masked individuals took to the streets following the arrest of a Sudanese migrant in connection with a serious knife attack. Homes, vehicles and a bus were set on fire in several areas of the city, with police reporting widespread disorder and multiple arson incidents. Some reports also suggested that properties in certain neighbourhoods were deliberately targeted during the unrest.
The violence came after a stabbing incident in north Belfast on Monday night, in which a man suffered serious injuries to his face, neck and back during an attack in a residential area. The victim, identified as Stephen Ogilvie, remains in hospital in a serious condition. The suspect, described by police as a 30-year-old asylum seeker who had been granted leave to remain, has been charged with attempted murder and related offences.
Authorities deployed additional police resources as unrest escalated, with officers coming under attack as fires spread across multiple streets. Vehicles were damaged, and several properties were evacuated amid the disorder. Police said they were responding to “sporadic pockets of violence” and urged the public to remain calm while dispersal orders were issued.
The incidents have sparked a wider political debate over immigration and border arrangements under the Common Travel Area, which allows free movement between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland without routine passport checks. Political leaders condemned the violence, with Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill describing the attacks as “outright thuggery,” while also urging against targeting innocent communities. The situation has also prompted renewed calls for a review of border security and asylum processing arrangements.
