DUBAI, May 15: Dubai Police have apprehended an Asian national for engaging in multiple reckless and dangerous driving behaviours on public roads, including sudden swerving at high speed, weaving between vehicles, and overtaking from the road shoulder, authorities confirmed.
The driver was intercepted by traffic patrols after being observed performing maneuvers that endangered his own life and the safety of other road users. Officials said the actions posed a serious risk, particularly on high-speed highways where sudden lane changes or loss of control can result in severe crashes.
Brigadier Juma Salem bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, said such violations are among the most serious traffic offences, as they reduce reaction time for other motorists and significantly increase the risk of fatal accidents.
He explained that overtaking from the road shoulder is a particularly dangerous violation, noting that the shoulder is reserved for emergency and civil defence vehicles. Misuse of this lane, he said, can lead to sudden collisions and obstruct emergency response operations.
Brigadier bin Suwaidan added that high-speed reckless driving combined with abrupt lane changes can cause vehicles to skid, overturn, or crash into roadside barriers or other vehicles.
He confirmed that legal action was taken against the driver, including vehicle impoundment and penalties under Local Decree No. (30) of 2023, which requires a AED 50,000 fee for the release of vehicles involved in such offences.
Authorities stressed that Dubai Police maintains a strict approach toward reckless driving and urged motorists to follow traffic laws to ensure road safety.
He also encouraged the public to report dangerous driving incidents through the “Police Eye” service or the “We Are All Police” hotline on 901.
