Vessel struck by unknown projectile in Strait of Hormuz

LONDON, Sep 13: A vessel was struck by an unknown projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, according to a verified warning issued by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

UKMTO said it received the report at 2300 UTC on September 12 under Warning 134-26, classifying the incident as an attack.

The maritime agency said the condition of the crew, the extent of any damage and the possible environmental impact were not known at this time.

UKMTO advised vessels operating in the area to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to the agency while authorities investigate the incident.

The warning comes amid heightened security concerns surrounding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route for regional and international energy supplies. A separate vessel was struck by an unknown projectile in the strait in August, with that incident resulting in engine-room damage and a crew casualty

UKMTO has not identified the projectile or attributed responsibility for the latest incident.
