CARACAS, Jul 4: The death toll from the powerful earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela last month has climbed to 2,954, while 16,592 people have been injured, the country's Communication and Information Ministry said on Saturday.
Authorities said 6,462 people have been rescued since the twin earthquakes hit, damaging 856 buildings and causing 190 structures to collapse.
The government said 3,281 international rescue workers joined relief operations, while nearly 29,600 Venezuelan personnel were deployed to support rescue, recovery and reconstruction efforts.
According to the US Geological Survey, the two earthquakes, measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, struck just 39 seconds apart on June 24. Officials said 942 aftershocks have been recorded since the disaster.
