CARACAS, Jun 25: At least 164 people have been killed and 971 others injured after a series of powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela, interim President Delcy Rodríguez said early Thursday.
The revised death toll marks a sharp increase as rescue teams continue searching through damaged buildings and collapsed structures across the country.
Emergency crews worked through the night in Caracas and other affected regions, attempting to locate survivors and assess the extent of the destruction.
The two strongest earthquakes, measuring 7.5 and 7.2 magnitude, had their epicenters west of Caracas near the city of San Felipe. However, several aftershocks struck closer to densely populated areas, including the capital, increasing fears of further damage.
Authorities have continued rescue and relief operations as assessments of casualties and structural damage remain underway. Officials warned that the toll could change as teams reach more affected areas.
