VATICAN CITY, Oct 10: Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin has condemned the idea of turning an execution into a public spectacle, describing the proposal as “unacceptable” regardless of the condemned person's guilt.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Parolin questioned the purpose of broadcasting an execution and said other methods should be considered, adding that such an approach was “truly incomprehensible” in the present day.
The remarks were attributed to a reported US proposal to livestream the execution of former US Army Maj. Nidal Hasan, who was sentenced to death for fatally shooting 13 unarmed US soldiers at Fort Hood military base in Texas in November 2009.
However, the reported announcement by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth concerning a Dec. 3 execution and livestream has not been independently confirmed. The claim that the broadcast would mark the first public execution in the United States in nearly a century also requires verification
