Vaping habit intensifies symptoms, posing life-threatening consequences.

NEW YORK, Jan 21: In a harrowing ordeal, Jackson Allard, a 22-year-old from North Dakota, defied a mere 1% chance of survival after being hospitalized and placed on life support due to severe complications resulting from years of heavy vaping.

Allard's health crisis began in October when he sought medical attention for stomach aches. Admitted to a clinic due to low oxygen levels, further diagnoses revealed Influenza 4 and double pneumonia. His condition worsened, leading to a subsequent transfer to the University of Minnesota, detailed in a GoFundMe page.

Facing a dire prognosis, Allard's family, particularly his grandmother Doreen Hurlburt, remained resolute in their determination. Hurlburt shared the emotional journey, recalling a doctor's grim estimation of a 1% chance of survival and the family's unwavering decision to fight against the odds, as reported by Valley News Live.

As Allard's condition plummeted within the hospital, doctors made the difficult decision to place him on life support to provide essential rest for his body, as documented by the Wahpeton Daily News.

Hurlburt attributed her grandson's symptoms to his heavy vaping habit, revealing that at one point during his three-month hospital stay, Allard's heart stopped beating. Doctors delivered a poor prognosis, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

With Allard's health hanging in the balance, Hurlburt repeatedly implored him to quit vaping, echoing experts who deemed it worse than traditional smoking. Allard, characterized as "friendly, outgoing, energetic, and fun," defended his habit, insisting it was "better than cigarettes." A familial debate ensued, discussing the long-term health implications.

The controversy surrounding vaping's health risks prompted discussions about a surgeon general's report. Lawrence Gostin, a public health law expert at Georgetown University, emphasized the need for clarity amidst conflicting messages about the safety of electronic cigarettes.

Amidst the emotional turmoil, Allard underwent a double lung transplant on January 1, marking a pivotal turning point in his health journey. While the life-saving procedure saved him, Allard and his mother face significant changes, including a mandatory six-month stay in Minnesota for regular checkups.

Allard's life post-transplant is forever altered, with strict prohibitions against smoking or drinking. His story serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of vaping, as he anticipates the possibility of another transplant later in life.
