ISLAMABAD, Apr 12: U.S. Vice President JD Vance has called on Iran to make a clear and binding commitment that it will not pursue nuclear weapons, underscoring Washington’s core objective in ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Speaking amid heightened regional tensions and stalled negotiations, Vance said the United States is seeking an “affirmative commitment” from Iran not only to refrain from building a nuclear weapon but also from acquiring the capabilities that could enable a rapid breakthrough.
“We need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon, and they will not seek the tools that would enable them to quickly achieve a nuclear weapon,” Vance stated.
He emphasized that preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons remains the central goal of the administration of Donald Trump, adding that recent negotiations have been focused on securing that outcome.
“That is the core goal of the president of the United States, and that's what we've tried to achieve through these negotiations,” he said.
The remarks come after extended talks between U.S. and Iranian officials ended without a breakthrough, raising uncertainty over the future of diplomatic efforts and the stability of the region.
