WASHINGTON, Jun 18: US Vice President JD Vance said the newly signed memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran should be measured by Iran’s actions rather than its promises, stressing that the agreement focuses on conduct rather than rhetoric.
Speaking in an interview with CBN News, Vance said the effectiveness of the agreement would depend on how Iran’s new leadership behaves in practice.
“The good thing about this MoU is that it is not about words, it is about their conduct,” Vance said.
The vice president said the administration had been deeply concerned by the treatment of protesters under Iran’s previous leadership, describing the killing of demonstrators as a major issue for US officials.
“One of the things that the president was very bothered and the whole administration was bothered by was all these innocent protesters being slaughtered by those people who were in charge a few months ago,” Vance said.
He noted that those leaders were no longer in power and said Washington would closely watch whether the new leadership adopts a different approach toward the Iranian people.
“Those people are now gone. But we are going to see. Do these new leaders treat the people differently? We certainly hope so,” he said.
Vance added that the United States would evaluate Tehran based on observable behavior rather than public statements.
“If they don’t, we can figure out when we see their actual conduct. Which is why I say, the good thing about this MoU is that it is not about words, it is about their conduct,” he said.
His remarks come as the United States and Iran begin implementing a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending hostilities, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, easing sanctions and launching negotiations toward a broader final agreement.
