KUWAIT CITY, May 22: Members of the Supreme Committee for Vaccination against “COVID-19” confirmed the arrival of the third shipment of the Oxford vaccine a few days ago. They indicated the vaccines are currently in the warehouse of the approved agent, and that it is sufficient for all those who have received the first dose, and that receiving it from the agent depends on the completion of the required procedures including technical certificates, which are expected to be readied by the end of this month.

During its participation in the ‘Kuwait Nights’ program, the committee announced that the Ministry of Health has requested 200 percent additional shipments of the Pfizer vaccines for children 12 years old and above, and stressed on the importance of vaccination to reduce the rate of infections. The sources disclosed 90 percent of all infected people who are in the intensive care of hospitals are known to have not received the vaccination and the same can be said about 93 percent of all the patients who have been hospitalized.

The rate of admission to intensive care for those who have received the first dose is 7.5% and does not exceed 1.5% for those who received the two doses. Professor of pediatrics and a member of the COVID-19 vaccine committee in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Khaled Al-Saeed stated the occupancy of wards and intensive care during the last three and a half months refl ects the existing epidemiological situation more precisely than swabs and daily cases, indicating that the second wave of the virus in Kuwait was more difficult and longer, hoping that the number of infections will continue to decrease in light of the expansion of the vaccination process.

He pointed to studies confirming that giving a single dose of the vaccine is sufficient, as is the case with the ‘Johnson & Johnson’ vaccine, which is from the same Oxford vaccine platform, and these are approved studies unlike other studies that some rely on to mislead and question the efficacy of the first dose of the vaccine, which relied on very few individuals.

Pediatrician and infectious diseases specialist Dr. Muhammad Ghoneim said the time interval between the two-dose vaccines has not yet been resolved, and Kuwait is following what has been clinically proven in the third phase and these studies published their results months ago and during this period the number of doses distributed around the world reached about one million and that there is a kind of follow-up about the effectiveness of vaccinations during different periods. There are countries that follow a time frame of four months between the two doses of Pfizer vaccine and in Kuwait it is given after three weeks and recently extended to 6 weeks, and there are countries that only give one dose of the vaccine.

Consultant clinical diseases Dr. Mona Al- Ahmad indicated that there is a principle for the vaccine by giving a first dose and then a stimulant dose, confirming that many countries have set 12 weeks between the two doses and there are many studies in this regard that have focused on statistical analysis, where the effectiveness of the person vaccinated increased by 85% if the second dose was given after 12 weeks. Al-Ahmad praised the efforts that have been exerted by the health authorities to monitor the side effects of vaccines through an electronic system managed by an integrated medical team in all specialties to inspect and review all reports that reach them after vaccination, as the medical team deals with teams distributed over hospitals, noting that the symptoms that have been monitored are mostly mild side effects, pain, fever which lasts for one to two days, and headache, in addition to some cases that had itching and rashes while they were under investigation. Head of the Drug Registration Department, Dr Dunia Al Bastaki, said the control of vaccines takes place in different stages, the first is the initial licensing or approval, and this is done after reviewing all safety, efficacy or quality procedures, as they are carefully reviewed by the drug control and public health team.
