WASHINGTON, Jun 28: The United States will continue targeting Iran’s military infrastructure if Tehran threatens international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said on Sunday.

In an interview with Fox News, Waltz warned that Washington would respond forcefully to any future Iranian attacks on commercial shipping or US military installations in the region.

“If the Iranian regime thinks for a second that President Donald Trump is going to stand by while Iran continues to attack international shipping or our bases without a response, they’re sadly mistaken,” Waltz said.

He added that the United States would, if necessary, continue military operations to destroy infrastructure Iran allegedly uses to “illegally control an international waterway.”

Waltz said diplomatic discussions between Washington and Tehran were continuing, stressing that President Trump remained willing to pursue negotiations but warning that “the president’s patience isn’t going to last forever.”

He also reiterated that all options remain on the table to ensure Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon.

The remarks came a day after the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced strikes on multiple Iranian military targets in response to what it described as Iran’s latest attack on a commercial vessel near the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) subsequently said it launched missile and drone attacks targeting eight US military sites in Kuwait and Bahrain in retaliation for the US strikes.

Despite the renewed military exchanges, the United States and Iran continue to hold technical discussions following the signing of a memorandum of understanding on June 18 aimed at reaching a lasting peace agreement, with implementation talks having begun on June 21.
