WASHINGTON, Oct 29: The United States has warned several Middle Eastern countries and regional allies to prepare for possible renewed military strikes against Iran after next week’s US midterm elections, along with potential Iranian retaliation, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.
The warnings were conveyed by US diplomats and defense officials, according to two diplomats briefed on the matter who spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.
US President Donald Trump has not made a final decision on whether to authorize another round of strikes against Iran, the diplomats said.
US officials informed regional allies that any renewed military campaign could last several days. However, regional governments are also preparing for the possibility that Iranian retaliation and attacks by Tehran-backed groups could prolong the fighting.
Washington has urged its allies to take precautionary measures in anticipation of possible Iranian attacks against energy facilities and other critical infrastructure, AP reported.
The warnings highlight growing concerns that renewed US military action could trigger a wider regional confrontation, threatening vital energy infrastructure and potentially disrupting regional security.
The White House and US officials declined to comment on the reported warnings.
The developments come as diplomatic efforts continue to prevent a resumption of hostilities. Qatar is leading mediation efforts, with support from regional partners, to revive negotiations between Washington and Tehran and seek an agreement that could avert further military action.
The prospect of renewed strikes, however, remains unresolved, with no final decision announced by Trump and the possibility of Iranian retaliation adding to regional concerns.
