WASHINGTON, Jul 13: U.S. President Donald Trump announced Monday that the United States would reinstate a blockade targeting Iranian ships and their customers while keeping the Strait of Hormuz open to vessels from all other countries.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the measure would apply only to Iran.

“We are reinstating the THE IRANIAN BLOCKADE, so named because it is only stopping Iran’s ships or customers from entering or leaving,” he wrote.

Trump added that commercial traffic from other nations would continue uninterrupted through the strategic waterway.

“The Hormuz Strait is OPEN, and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran,” he said.

The U.S. president also declared that the United States would become the “Guardian of the Hormuz Strait” and said Washington would impose a fee equal to 20% of all cargo shipped through the vital maritime corridor to cover the cost of providing security.

“The process and formation will begin immediately,” Trump said.

The announcement comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf, where the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global shipping route through which a significant share of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas supplies passes. No immediate details were provided on how the proposed blockade or cargo fee would be implemented.
