WASHINGTON, Aug 7: The United States is prepared to lift its blockade of Iranian ports once Iran and Oman reach an agreement to restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters reported Friday, citing a US official.

The official said progress had been made in talks between Oman and Iran and that a deal was expected soon. Under the proposed arrangement, the US would lift the blockade after an agreement is announced to ensure commercial shipping can pass through the strategic waterway without impediments.

However, the US measures would remain performance-based, with Washington tying any easing of restrictions to Iran’s implementation of its commitments, the official said.

The developments come amid heightened tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route for oil and other commodities.
