WASHINGTON, May 31: President Donald Trump has reportedly toughened the terms of a proposed framework aimed at reaching a peace deal involving Iran and sent the revised proposal back for review, according to a New York Times report citing three officials.

The report said it is not yet clear what specific changes were made to the draft agreement. However, officials noted that Trump has expressed concern over provisions that could include unfreezing Iranian funds.

He has also reportedly grown frustrated over delays in Iran’s response to earlier US proposals, with one official saying the negotiations have been slowed despite mediation efforts involving intermediaries, including Pakistan.

According to the report, Trump’s revisions may be intended to accelerate the process by increasing pressure on Tehran to accept the framework that has already been forwarded for approval to Iran’s Supreme Leader.

Meanwhile, US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said he recently spoke with Trump and expressed support for a deal that includes US demands such as opening the Strait of Hormuz and initiating talks on curbing Iran’s nuclear program and regional activities.

Separately, former Trump administration envoy Morgan Ortagus said US military actions had strengthened Washington’s negotiating position by significantly weakening Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Speaking to Fox News, she accused Iran of negotiating in bad faith and described its leadership as a “theocratic revolutionary regime,” arguing that financial incentives are unlikely to influence its behavior.
