WASHINGTON, Aug. 17: The U.S. Navy has awarded Raytheon, an RTX business, a $22.9 billion, seven-year contract to significantly expand production of Tomahawk cruise missiles as the Pentagon moves to replenish and strengthen its long-range strike weapons stockpile.
The contract is aimed at rapidly increasing Tomahawk production while providing RTX with the stability needed to expand its workforce, increase manufacturing capacity and strengthen its supply chain, the Defense Department said.
Under the agreement, RTX is expected to increase annual Tomahawk production from about 60 missiles to more than 1,000, representing a major expansion in output.
“The Department called upon industry to expand munitions production, and RTX has answered that call,” said Michael P. Duffey, the under secretary of defense for acquisition and sustainment.
Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao described the agreement as a major investment in the Navy’s strike capabilities, saying the deal would accelerate delivery of Tomahawk missiles to U.S. forces.
The contract comes as the Pentagon seeks to speed the delivery of critical weapons and reduce procurement timelines while expanding the capacity of the U.S. defense industrial base.
