ABU DHABI, Aug 1: The US Mission to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has urged American citizens in the Middle East to consider leaving the region or be prepared to depart if security conditions deteriorate further, warning of a complex and unpredictable environment amid heightened regional tensions.
In a security advisory issued on Saturday, the mission said Americans currently in the region should exercise increased caution and remain prepared for possible flight cancellations, temporary airspace closures, and travel disruptions. The advisory noted that some airlines have delayed the resumption of previously scheduled flights, while others have cancelled certain routes due to the evolving security situation.
The US Mission also advised Americans outside the Middle East to seriously reconsider travel to or through the region and urged those travelling to monitor airport and airline updates closely. It warned that US diplomatic facilities, businesses, and institutions linked to the United States could face potential threats, adding that Iran and groups aligned with Tehran may target US interests overseas.
The advisory described the regional situation as “fluid” and said the Iranian regime’s recent actions, including attacks in areas beyond previous targets, demonstrate the possibility of sudden escalation. The mission urged Americans to remain vigilant, noting that the absence of previous attacks against US interests in a particular country does not guarantee future safety.
The US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and US Consulate General in Dubai remain under ordered departure status, meaning non-emergency US government personnel have been relocated outside the UAE. The mission said consular assistance remains available, while limited non-immigrant visa appointments are continuing and all immigrant visa services remain suspended.
The US Mission advised Americans to take the following precautions:
- Enroll in the US Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for security updates and emergency communication.
- Avoid demonstrations, large gatherings, and areas with heavy police presence.
- Stay away from windows, glass doors, and debris in the event of an aerial attack.
- Keep mobile phones charged and emergency contacts accessible.
- Monitor local media and follow instructions from UAE authorities.
- Contact airlines directly regarding flight changes or cancellations.
- Maintain a low profile and remain alert at locations associated with the United States.
The advisory provided emergency contact details, including UAE emergency services at 999, the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi at +971-2-414-2200, and the US Consulate General in Dubai at +971-4-309-4000.
