WASHINGTON, Aug 1: The war with Iran has significantly reduced the United States' stockpile of advanced missile defense interceptors, while Russia is reportedly providing Tehran with electronic intelligence to strengthen its air defenses and improve the accuracy of its attacks, according to separate US media reports.
US interceptor stockpiles fall sharply
Fox News, citing estimates from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), reported that the US military's inventory of key missile defense systems has fallen considerably after months of operations against Iran.
The report said Patriot interceptor stockpiles have declined from approximately 2,300 before the conflict to fewer than 827, while Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor inventories have dropped from 452 to fewer than 278.
The depletion has reportedly raised concerns among Pentagon officials and defense analysts about the US military's ability to sustain prolonged operations while maintaining readiness for other potential conflicts.
To address the shortfall, the Pentagon has requested billions of dollars in emergency funding to replenish critical weapons inventories, including Patriot interceptors, THAAD interceptors and Tomahawk cruise missiles, according to the Fox News report.
Russia reportedly supplying intelligence to Iran
In a separate report, NBC News said Russia is providing Iran with electronic intelligence, including satellite surveillance and signals intelligence, to help Tehran counter US military operations.
Citing US and European officials familiar with the intelligence, NBC News reported that the information is enabling Iran to better detect US military movements during aerial operations and could assist in disrupting the effectiveness of US-made weapons systems.
According to the report, Russian satellite data and signals intelligence are also helping Iran improve the precision of its drone and missile attacks while enhancing the protection of key military assets as the conflict with the United States continues.
A US official and a European official told NBC News that Moscow has shared electronic intelligence with Tehran. The reported assistance follows earlier claims that Russia had provided Iran with information on the locations of US forces deployed across the Middle East.
Neither the Pentagon nor Russian and Iranian authorities had publicly commented on the reports at the time of publication.
