US Military Disables Gambia-Flagged Vessel Attempting to Reach Iran

MUSCAT, May 30: The US military has confirmed that it disabled a Gambia-flagged cargo vessel, the M/V Lian Star, in the Gulf of Oman after it allegedly attempted to breach a US-enforced blockade and sail toward an Iranian port on May 29. US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the ship ignored more than 20 warnings while transiting international waters before a US aircraft fired a Hellfire missile into its engine room, rendering it unable to continue its journey. The statement said the vessel was stopped after failing to comply with repeated instructions to alter course.

CENTCOM said the strike was carried out to enforce the blockade on Iran and prevent unauthorized maritime access to its ports. The military confirmed that the Lian Star is the fifth commercial vessel disabled under the ongoing operation, while 116 others have been redirected. However, the statement did not specify whether there were any injuries or casualties on board following the attack.
