ARLINGTON, Aug 23: US military casualties in the war with Iran have risen to 774, including 18 deaths and 756 injuries, according to the latest figures from the Pentagon’s Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS).
The Pentagon’s casualty reporting system now separates the losses into two distinct periods, reflecting changes in the US military’s operations and the status of the conflict. The first period, identified as Operation Epic Fury, accounts for 14 deaths and 417 wounded service members. Of the 14 deaths, seven were classified as hostile deaths, meaning they were linked to combat, including personnel killed in action or those who later died from their wounds. The other seven deaths were attributed to accidents or listed as undetermined causes, with the US Air Force and Navy among the services affected.
The second category, listed as Overseas Operations, covers casualties recorded since July 7, after a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran had effectively broken down and one day before President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire “over.” This period has so far recorded four hostile deaths and 341 wounded personnel, all of the reported fatalities coming from the US Army.
The US Army has suffered the heaviest overall losses, with 11 fatalities and 589 injuries across the two reporting periods. The figures provide a breakdown of the human cost of the conflict among US service members as Washington’s military operations against Iran have continued through different phases of the war.
