WASHINGTON/TEHRAN: The United States launched airstrikes on Iranian missile, drone and radar sites on Friday, saying the operation was in response to an Iranian drone attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, while Iranian state media reported that a projectile struck a pier near the strategic waterway.

In a statement, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said US aircraft targeted Iranian missile and drone storage facilities as well as coastal radar sites after Tehran allegedly struck the Singapore-flagged cargo ship M/V Ever Lovely with a one-way attack drone on Thursday.

"The unwarranted aggression against commercial shipping by Iranian forces clearly violated the ceasefire. Furthermore, Iran's dangerous behavior undermined freedom of navigation as commerce increasingly flows through the vital international trade corridor," CENTCOM said.

The command added that US forces continue to coordinate and support the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz and remain "present and vigilant" to ensure compliance with the ceasefire agreement.

Meanwhile, Iran's state broadcaster IRIB, citing an informed military source, reported that an explosion at Tahrouyi Pier near the Strait of Hormuz was caused by a projectile striking the dock area.

The source also said Iranian forces had fired several warning shots hours earlier toward vessels it described as "violators" in the Strait of Hormuz. No further details were provided, and Iranian authorities did not immediately comment on the US strikes.

The developments mark a sharp escalation in tensions around the strategic waterway, a critical route for global oil and gas shipments, following recent attacks on commercial shipping despite a ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran.
