WASHINGTON, Jun 10: The US military has announced that it has begun carrying out “self-defense strikes” against Iran, following the downing of a US Army Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz, according to US Central Command.
Central Command said the operation was launched on the direction of US President Donald Trump, describing it as a “proportional response” to the incident involving the helicopter.
The strikes mark a significant escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran, coming days after reports of the US helicopter being downed in the Gulf region.
Speaking to ABC News, Trump described the US response as “strong” and “powerful,” saying the operation was a direct reaction to the earlier incident.
“We’re responding… this is a response to what they did with our helicopter last night, and I believe the response should be very strong, very powerful, and that’s what this one is,” Trump said.
US officials have not yet released details on the scope or impact of the strikes, while Iranian authorities have not issued an immediate response.
The situation continues to develop amid heightened military tensions in the Gulf region.
