WASHINGTON, Jul 8: The United States has launched a series of military strikes against Iran in response to attacks on three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced late Tuesday.
In a statement, CENTCOM said the strikes were carried out to hold Iran accountable for targeting civilian-crewed commercial shipping in one of the world's busiest maritime corridors.
"The strikes are intended to impose heavy costs on Iran for targeting commercial shipping crewed by civilians in an international waterway."
The US military accused Iran of carrying out what it described as unprovoked aggression that violated the ceasefire and threatened regional stability.
"Iran's demonstrated aggression was unwarranted, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire."
The military action follows attacks earlier on Tuesday on three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, an escalation that prompted international concern over the security of global shipping and energy supplies.
The strikes mark a significant escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran as the strategic Gulf waterway remains on high alert following a series of attacks on commercial shipping.
in its message on X, CENTCOM stated, "U.S. Central Command forces have begun launching a series of powerful strikes against Iran to impose heavy costs for targeting and attacking commercial shipping crewed by innocent civilians in an international waterway. The U.S. strikes are in response to Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels that were transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s demonstrated aggression was unwarranted, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire."
