WASHINGTON, Jun 19: US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has released a collection of newly declassified documents related to the origins of COVID-19, reigniting debate over whether the virus emerged through natural transmission or a laboratory-related incident.
The documents, released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), include internal communications, whistleblower allegations and intelligence material gathered during reviews of the pandemic’s origins. Gabbard said the release was intended to provide transparency after what she described as years of “lies, censorship, and cover-ups.”
“The COVID-19 pandemic caused tremendous hardship and pain for millions of our fellow Americans and for countless people around the world,” Gabbard said, adding that the public deserved “truth and accountability” regarding how the pandemic began.
The ODNI said the documents raise questions about research funding, coronavirus studies involving bat viruses and interactions between US officials and intelligence agencies during investigations into the origins of the virus.
Allegations Involving Fauci
The documents also brought renewed attention to former top US health official Anthony Fauci, who led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) during the early years of the pandemic.
Gabbard alleged that Fauci “lied to Congress while under oath in 2024,” while the ODNI claimed that some communications reviewed during the investigation conflict with statements made during his congressional testimony.
The intelligence office alleged that Fauci was involved in discussions surrounding intelligence assessments of COVID-19 origins, remained in contact with intelligence officials during key stages of the review process, and oversaw funding connected to coronavirus research involving bat viruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
The allegations have not been independently verified, and the documents do not provide a final determination about how the virus emerged.
Fauci Rejects Allegations
Fauci has repeatedly denied accusations that he misled lawmakers or attempted to conceal information about COVID-19 research. During a congressional hearing in 2024, he rejected claims that he covered up evidence related to the pandemic’s origins, calling such allegations false.
He has said that both a natural spillover event and a laboratory accident remain possible explanations, but has stated that available scientific evidence has leaned toward natural transmission while acknowledging that no definitive conclusion has been reached.
Intelligence Agencies Still Have No Final Answer
US intelligence agencies have not reached a consensus on whether SARS-CoV-2 originated from a laboratory incident or from natural transmission. Different agencies have previously reached different assessments, with varying levels of confidence.
The newly released documents are part of an ongoing debate that has continued since COVID-19 was first identified in Wuhan in late 2019.
The virus, which causes COVID-19, led to a global pandemic declared by the World Health Organization in March 2020. The outbreak resulted in millions of deaths worldwide and caused widespread disruption to economies, healthcare systems and daily life.
While the latest document release has intensified scrutiny of US-funded research and official responses during the pandemic, investigators have yet to establish a definitive origin for the virus.
