AMMAN, July 19: The U.S. Embassy in Jordan on Sunday urged American citizens to avoid Aqaba International Airport and Aqaba Seaport after the facilities were evacuated due to what it described as a “specific and credible threat.”
In a statement posted on X, the embassy advised Americans not to travel to either location and urged them to continue following security instructions issued by Jordanian authorities.
“We strongly advise all Americans to refrain from travelling to either the airport or seaport. Continue to follow all Jordanian authorities' security directives,” the embassy said.
The warning came hours after air raid sirens sounded across Jordan following reported Iranian attacks in the region, raising security concerns and prompting authorities to increase vigilance.
Aqaba, Jordan’s only coastal city, is located near the Israeli Red Sea port city of Eilat, making the area strategically sensitive amid rising regional tensions.
Jordanian authorities had not immediately provided further details about the nature of the reported threat or the duration of the evacuation measures at Aqaba’s transport facilities.
