WASHINGTON, Apr 14: Discontent is growing among American Catholics following remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump targeting Pope Leo XIV, even as the president sought to clarify controversy over a separate viral image he shared online.

Despite strong Catholic voter support during his 2024 election victory, Trump is now facing backlash across the Catholic spectrum. The criticism extends beyond liberal voices, with even conservative-leaning church figures expressing concern over what has been described as an unprecedented verbal attack on the pope.

Pope Leo XIV, the first American to lead the Catholic Church, has maintained that his statements are rooted in the Gospel, emphasizing peace and cautioning against rhetoric that could fuel conflict, particularly in relation to the Iran war. He has avoided directly naming or attacking Trump.

However, prominent U.S. church leaders have spoken out. Paul Coakley, head of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Robert Barron, a Minnesota-based bishop, both criticized Trump’s remarks. Barron described the comments as “entirely inappropriate and disrespectful” and urged the president to apologize.

The controversy comes alongside another viral moment involving Trump. Addressing criticism over an image he posted on Truth Social, Trump rejected claims that it portrayed him as Jesus Christ.

“I did post it, and I thought it was me as a doctor,” Trump said, adding that the image was intended to depict him as a Red Cross-style medical figure. He emphasized it symbolized support for humanitarian efforts, not religious imagery.

The twin controversies underscore mounting tensions between Trump and segments of the Catholic community, raising questions about the durability of his support among religious voters ahead of future political battles.
