US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll resigns amid tensions with Hegseth during Iran war

WASHINGTON, Sep 1: US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has submitted his resignation to the White House amid months of tensions with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Reuters reported Monday, citing a source familiar with the matter.

The resignation comes as the United States remains engaged in war with Iran, with thousands of US Army personnel deployed across the Middle East.

It was not immediately clear whether the White House had accepted Driscoll’s resignation.

According to the source, Driscoll had raised concerns within the administration about Army transformation and military readiness. He reportedly believed Hegseth had obstructed those efforts by removing senior generals involved in the initiatives.

A US official told Reuters that Hegseth had wanted to remove Driscoll for some time, viewing him as a potential threat within the Pentagon bureaucracy. However, Driscoll’s close ties with Vice President JD Vance had reportedly complicated efforts to push him out.

Tensions between the two reportedly intensified after Hegseth dismissed Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George in April, while US forces were conducting military operations in the Middle East.

The White House praised Driscoll’s tenure, saying he provided leadership during “historic military operations” and helped strengthen the Army’s focus on readiness and lethality.

Driscoll’s departure would mark another senior-level change at the Pentagon as the Trump administration oversees ongoing US military operations in the Middle East.
