BAGHDAD, Oct 2:  The United States has approved a waiver allowing Iranian airlines, except Mahan Air, to operate up to 40 flights a day to and from Najaf International Airport, Iraqi authorities said on Friday. The move expands an earlier U.S. exemption that covered Iraqi Airways flights between Iraq and Iran.

Iraq said the agreement followed government efforts and consultations with relevant parties to restore air links with Iran. Baghdad welcomed the decision, saying it would facilitate travel for medical treatment, religious visits and tourism, while consultations would continue to address remaining obstacles to air transportation. The latest development follows the U.S. Treasury's issuance of a temporary license allowing Iraqi Airways to operate Iran-Najaf services under strict conditions through Oct. 28, including restrictions on passengers and cargo.
