WASHINGTON, March 19: The U.S. State Department announced on Thursday plans to sell significant defense systems to several Middle Eastern countries.
The proposed sales include more than $8 billion in air defense systems and related equipment to the United Arab Emirates, comprising drones, air-to-air missiles, and F-16 fighter jet munitions. Kuwait is set to receive $8 billion in missile defense and radar systems, while Jordan will receive $70.5 million in aircraft and munitions support.
An additional $6 billion in sales to the three countries was approved but did not require congressional notification, as these involve adjustments to previously approved packages or purely commercial transactions, a State Department official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The sales underscore ongoing U.S. efforts to strengthen defense and security cooperation with its regional partners.
