LONDON, Aug 18: A vessel was struck by an unknown projectile while sailing outbound through the Strait of Hormuz early Tuesday, causing damage to its engine room and leaving one crew member injured, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
The vessel's Company Security Officer reported the incident to UKMTO, saying the projectile hit the ship during its outbound transit of the strategic waterway.
The remaining crew members are being assisted by the Omani Coast Guard, UKMTO said. No environmental impact has been reported so far.
Authorities are investigating the incident, while UKMTO urged vessels operating in and around the Strait of Hormuz to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy shipments. Growing concerns over maritime security have raised fears of disruptions to shipping and energy supplies as diplomatic efforts continue over freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway.
