United by dreams: 6 sisters triumph over homelessness to become nurses

NEW YORK, Oct 21, (Agencies): For the past ten years, six sisters have faced homelessness but remain undeterred in their pursuit of becoming nurses. The Lawrence sisters’ turbulent journey began in 2013 when their parents, David and Yonette, lost their home in Queens, a borough of New York City. This unfortunate event led to a nomadic lifestyle as they moved from one family member’s or friend’s house to another.

Lauren, now 24, described their experience as “challenging,” marked by numerous bumpy and depressing moments. Yet, just two years into this ordeal, David, their father, made a crucial decision. He was determined not to let their situation hinder his daughters’ education. Despite the constant relocations and difficulties attending traditional schools, he encouraged them to continue learning.

Consequently, the six eldest Lawrence sisters, in their late elementary and middle school years, enrolled in a homeschooling program with dreams of earning their GEDs one day. Dominique, 25, noted that their father didn’t want their circumstances to hold them back.

This resilient clan pushed forward, undeterred. In 2019, all six Lawrence sisters earned their GEDs, showcasing their determination. They then began an educational journey at Nassau Community College on Long Island. After two years of hard work, they enrolled in SUNY Old Westbury, earning their bachelor’s degrees in public health in May.

These siblings, now between 19 and 25, acknowledge that their journey is just beginning. In August, they started a master’s program in public health at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, with nursing school on the horizon.

Their story is a testament to the dreams and aspirations of these young women, who, despite a tumultuous and uncertain childhood, are now on the path to realizing their dreams.
