Unexploded ordnance blast kills 3 children, injures 2 in N.Afghanistan

KABUL, Nov 27, (Xinhua): Three children lost their lives and two others were injured in the blast of an unexploded ordnance left over from past wars in northern Afghanistan's Balkh province, the provincial police office said in a statement Wednesday night.

The incident took place in Nahri Shahi district of the province, after the children found the device and began playing with it, but the device exploded, killing the three kids on the spot, and injuring two others, according to the statement.

In a similar tragedy last Sunday, two people were killed and seven others wounded in an unexploded ordnance blast in southern Kandahar province. Afghanistan is reportedly one of the most mine-contaminated countries in the world, as the unexploded devices and mines have been left over from more than four decades of wars and civil strife in the past.
