UNESCO announces Iraq’s church reconstruction

IRBIL, March 9: United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced on Thursday the reconstruction of Iraq’s Nineveh Governorate famous church, in the city of Mosul. UNESCO said in a statement that the Director-General Audrey Azoulay attended the opening ceremony of the Catholic Church in the city of Mosul to reinstall the church’s clock, adding that it was the first tower clock built in the city In a press conference, Minister of Culture and Tourism Dr. Ahmad Al-Badrani said that this step is important as it comes from the Iraqi government and UNESCO agreement to restore life in Mosul as part of a wide campaign under the slogan “Revive the Spirit of Mosul.”

He added that he accompanied UNESCO’s delegation visiting the city in a tour inside old Mosul, which includes heritage houses and various buildings that were being reconstructed by UNESCO, based on the ministry’s recommendations. According to the Nineveh Antiquities Inspectorate, the church’s clock dates back to 1876 AD, consisting of four white sides with a circular disk on which the clock was painted with black Latin numbers, with different sizes of bells weighing 265kg, made of bronze in the city of Normandy in France, which was famous for making such bells.
