LOS ANGELES, Oct 10, (Agencies): Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is addressing the controversy surrounding his appeal for donations to a relief and recovery fund for Maui in the aftermath of the devastating fires that swept through the island.

In a heartfelt video posted on his Instagram account last Saturday, Johnson acknowledged the criticism he received and expressed his understanding. “I want to address and acknowledge the backlash that came from launching [the fund],” he began. “I get it, and I completely understand.”

The actor continued, reflecting on his initial approach and vowing to improve in the future. “I could have handled it better, and I promise to do so next time,” he assured his followers. Johnson recognized the financial constraints many people face, saying, “Money isn’t falling out of the sky, it isn’t growing on trees, and many are living paycheck to paycheck. I get it, and I know what that’s like.”

In August, Johnson had teamed up with Oprah Winfrey to initiate the People’s Fund of Maui, with each of them contributing $5 million to kickstart the fund and asking their fans to contribute if possible. However, the request for donations received criticism from some quarters, with individuals questioning why Johnson and Winfrey didn’t contribute more of their own wealth.

Drawing from his own experiences, Johnson empathized with those who felt uncomfortable being asked for money. “When I was living paycheck to paycheck, I was easily frustrated and angered. The last thing you want to hear is someone asking you for money, especially when that person already has a substantial fortune,” he admitted. “So I get it, I understand. I’ve never launched a fund before, but I’m a quick learner, and I’ve learned a valuable lesson.”

In addition to addressing criticism, Johnson expressed his gratitude to both those who supported the relief efforts and those who offered constructive feedback. He praised the transparency and open lines of communication his social media platform provided. “That’s one of the greatest things about my social media presence – the transparency we have and the relationship we share,” he said. “If I do something you appreciate, let me know, and if I make a mistake, you let me know too.”

Johnson concluded the video by sharing positive news, stating that many survivors of the devastating fires had already begun to receive financial assistance from the People’s Fund of Maui.
