UN Security Council Condemns Drone Attack Near Barakah Nuclear Plant in UAE

UNITED NATIONS, May 27: Members of the United Nations Security Council strongly condemned the drone attack targeting an electricity generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates, describing it as a serious violation of international law that posed grave risks to civilian lives, infrastructure, and the environment.

In a press statement, Security Council members expressed deep concern over what they called a dangerous escalation and demanded the immediate and permanent cessation of all attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure in the UAE, including threats or attacks targeting peaceful nuclear facilities.

The Council referred to relevant Security Council resolutions and resolutions adopted by the International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference, emphasizing growing concerns over attacks or threats against peaceful nuclear installations.

Council members also took note of remarks by IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi, who expressed grave concern over the incident and stressed that military activities endangering nuclear safety are unacceptable.

The statement urged all states to uphold the highest standards of nuclear safety, security, and safeguards, while refraining from actions that could jeopardize nuclear facilities. The Council reaffirmed that the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant was designed, built, and operated according to international safety standards under the oversight of the UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation and in line with IAEA regulations.

The Security Council further reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East and reaffirmed its strong support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the United Arab Emirates in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter.
