GENEVA, April 29: The United Nations has raised alarm over a sharp deterioration in human rights conditions in Iran, reporting that at least 21 people have been executed and more than 4,000 others arrested since the outbreak of war two months ago.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said the executions included individuals linked to the January 2026 protests, alleged members of opposition groups, and people accused of espionage. He noted that thousands more have been detained on charges related to national security.

“I am appalled that the rights of the Iranian people continue to be stripped from them,” Türk said, calling on Iranian authorities to immediately halt executions and release those arbitrarily detained.

He warned that conflicts often lead to a rapid escalation in human rights violations, stressing that fundamental protections—including the right to a fair trial—must be upheld even during times of war.

The UN’s statement adds to growing international concern over the situation in Iran, as reports of arrests, executions, and restrictions on civil liberties continue to emerge amid the ongoing conflict.
