NEW DELHI, Oct 10: The United Nations has expressed concern over reports of mass detentions in India involving demonstrators, protest leaders, members of civil society organisations, lawyers and journalists before and during large-scale demonstrations in New Delhi on Saturday.

The UN called on Indian authorities to fully respect the right to peaceful assembly, stressing that restrictions on peaceful protests must meet strict tests of necessity and proportionality. It also urged law enforcement personnel to exercise utmost restraint when dealing with peaceful protesters, in line with India’s democratic traditions and human rights obligations. The UN further called for the immediate and unconditional release of all those arbitrarily detained and urged the authorities to engage in meaningful dialogue to address the widely held concerns raised by demonstrators.
