HOHENFELS, Aug 13: Ukrainian drone operators reportedly outperformed US troops and armored units during a military exercise in Germany, highlighting the growing role of unmanned systems in modern warfare, according to media reports.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Ukrainian forces participating in the “Combined Resolve” exercise in April and May repeatedly detected and neutralized US units during simulated combat. About 3,500 US personnel, mainly from the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, took part, while Ukraine’s 412th Regiment of Unmanned Systems Forces supported the opposing force.
Ukrainian reconnaissance drones quickly located US armored vehicles, which were then targeted by explosive-carrying drones and first-person-view (FPV) systems. US officials reportedly said an armored brigade was effectively eliminated during the exercise.
US forces initially struggled despite having electronic-warfare and counter-drone capabilities. Their performance improved after troops adopted stronger concealment, wider dispersal and improved electronic-warfare tactics, underscoring how rapidly drone warfare is reshaping battlefield operations.
