KUWAIT CITY, Aug 20: On the occasion of the 35th Independence Day of Ukraine and the 33rd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Kuwait and Ukraine, the Embassy of Ukraine affirmed that independence for the Ukrainian people is an embodiment of freedom, sovereignty, democracy and the right to self-determination, reports Al-Seyassah daily.
In a press statement, the embassy highlighted the strong Kuwaiti-Ukrainian relations, stressing that the two countries share a deep understanding of the importance of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and adherence to international law and the United Nations (UN) Charter, while citing Kuwait's experience of Kuwait in dealing with the 1990 Iraqi invasion. It confirmed the support of Ukraine for Kuwait in facing the Iranian aggression and the efforts exerted by Kuwait and other Gulf countries to restore security and stability in the region, protect civilians, and ensure the continuation of development and prosperity. Regarding the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the embassy clarified that Ukraine is defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing that its objective is to achieve peace and restore its territories within the internationally recognized borders, while rejecting any alteration of borders by force. It expressed appreciation for the supportive position of Kuwait toward Ukraine, as well as the humanitarian assistance it has been providing since the start of the Russian invasion.
It disclosed that the Kuwaiti government allocated $1 million in 2023 to purchase generators for Ukraine amid attacks on its energy infrastructure. It affirmed the continuous need for international support for the energy sector of Ukraine. It also stated that the diplomatic relationship between the two countries officially began on April 18, 1993, and has since been marked by high-level visits, regular contact and political consultations. It reaffirmed the commitment of Ukraine to expand cooperation in trade, investment, food security, agriculture, energy, technology, education, culture and tourism. It stressed that the geographical distance between Kuwait and Ukraine has not prevented the two countries from developing relations founded on friendship and mutual respect.
