LONDON, May 24: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Sunday that any agreement reached between the United States and Iran must ensure the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz with unrestricted freedom of navigation for international shipping.
In a post published on X, Starmer welcomed recent progress in negotiations between Washington and Tehran aimed at easing regional tensions and resolving the ongoing crisis affecting the strategically important waterway.
“We need to see an agreement that brings the conflict to an end and reopens the Strait of Hormuz, with unconditional and unrestricted freedom of navigation,” Starmer said.
The British leader also reiterated the United Kingdom’s position that Iran must never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon, stressing that London would continue working closely with international partners to pursue a long-term diplomatic solution.
The remarks come amid increasing diplomatic activity surrounding a possible interim framework between the United States and Iran that could reduce tensions in the Gulf, restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and revive broader negotiations on regional security and Iran’s nuclear program.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, with a significant share of global oil and gas shipments passing through the narrow waterway each day. Rising tensions in recent months have raised concerns over shipping security, energy markets, and the wider stability of the region.
