LONDON, Jul 6: The UK government has announced tougher rules on political donations to protect British democracy from foreign interference, citing threats from countries including Russia, China and Iran.

The new measures follow a government review into overseas financial influence in British politics, which concluded that the UK continues to face a persistent threat from foreign actors seeking to influence its democratic processes.

The review was launched after a former Reform UK politician was jailed last year for accepting bribes in exchange for making pro-Russia speeches and public statements, raising concerns about the vulnerability of the country's political system to foreign funding.

Under the new rules, political parties and campaign organizations will face stricter requirements to verify the true source of donations and prevent overseas money from entering British politics through indirect channels.

Housing Minister Steve Reed said the reforms are designed to stop "dodgy funding" from influencing elections and to strengthen public confidence in the UK's democratic institutions.

The government said Iran, Russia and China are among the foreign states identified as attempting to interfere in or undermine Britain's democracy through influence operations and financial means.

The tighter regulations are part of broader efforts by the UK to bolster national security and safeguard elections from foreign interference, amid growing concerns across Europe about attempts by hostile states to shape political outcomes through covert funding and influence campaigns.
